Kwara Local Government workers suspend strike

Date: 2016-08-04

The Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called off its ongoing industrial action, with a call on members to resume work immediately. Local Council workers in the State had in June embarked on strike to protest non-payment of salaries.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Afolabi Abayomi, the Union said its decision to suspend the industrial action followed the promise of the State government to assist local councils in paying a full month salary to their workers.

NULGE, therefore, urged its members across the 16 local government areas in the State to resume work immediately and continue to contribute to the development of their respective local communities and the State in general.

It would be recalled that the State governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed last week approved the release of N162m to augment local governments allocation for the month of July to enable them pay a full month salary to their workers.

Governor Ahmed had also made a commitment to work with the council chairmen in finding means to clear the existing backlog of salary and pension arrears at the local level.
