Road Accidents: Blame Govt. - FRSC
Ekiti, Kogi and Kwara States governments have been blamed for frustration being encountered by the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, efforts to reduce carnage on the road.
Mr. Kehinde Adeleye, the zonalc of FRSC for the three states, stated that state governments across the nation were not contributing enough to assist the commission in accomplishing its strategies in checking accident on the highways.
The zonal commander disclosed this while fielding questions from newsmen after addressing men and officers of the Ekiti State command of the FRSC while on official visit to the area.
Mr. Adeleye, an assistant corps marshal, bemoaned rise in rate of accidents and casualties recorded on the highways and charged his men and officers in the state to improve on their efforts to reduce road accidents.
He pointed out that state governments hardly assist the FRSC to procure vehicles and other necessary logistics to improve their operations unlike the tremendous assistance rendered to the police and other law enforcement agencies.
According to the him, “We receive some level of cooperation from state governments at different levels, but state governments tend to shy away from the crusade for road safety. Many times we hear or read in the newspapers that state governments donate vehicles, weapons and other logistics to the police and other law enforcement agents to fight crime, but hardly do you come across a story where state governments assist the FRSC to ensure safety on our highways.”
He called on all stakeholders to stop reckless driving on the road saying “we all have a stake to ensure safety on the roads.”
Mr. Adeleye explained that the reports of police, hospitals and FRSC in the last three years indicated that there was an increase in accidents and casualties on the nation’s highway.
He revealed that the national headquarters of the FRSC was working assiduously to reposition the commission with a view to enhancing the efficiency and effect of the men and officers as well as the strategies.
