Kwara Assembly reviews rules for better performance
Leadership of the Kwara State House of Assembly said it will review its rules, strengthen and reinvigorate its standing and special committees for better performance, so as to improve on the wellbeing of the people.
The Speaker, Ali Ahmad, gave the assurance in Ilorin while presiding over the sitting that signified the beginning of another legislative year.
He explained that the current legislature had passed six bills, while three others are at various stages of consideration, especially the first private bill, "Violence Against Persons (Prohibiton) Bill 2015", 43 motions and 23 reports arising from Matters of General Public Importance and various petitions from the public.
The speaker noted that the motions delved into subjects considered too sensitive or hitherto no go-areas like the proliferation of filling stations in Kwara State, call for the reconstruction of Ilorin-Jebba highway that culminated in the relocation of the two Houses of Assembly in Kwara and Niger States to the site and investigation into SUBEB activities which led to the biometric screening of civil servants.
He disclosed that the House within five months of its inauguration successfully hosted the workshop on Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, for Speakers of the 36 States of the Federation which also featured a rancour free election into the leadership of the Conference of Speakers of States Legislature in Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of Kwara South caucus, Leader of the House, Hassan Oyeleke, described the eighth legislature as an interventionist, as it had resolved numerous industrial disputes between government and labour unions and ensured that every kobo is tied to specific projects through zero budgeting in this year's budget.
