Supreme Court's judgment against Saraki good for democracy - Kwara PDP Concerned Elders Forum
A group within the Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, Concerned Elders Forum, says the Supreme Court judgment that the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, should answer charges preferred against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau is good for democracy and the anti-corruption crusade.
The group commended the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, for frowning on the inconsistencies in judgments delivered by the election petitions tribunals across the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the CEF Chairman, Alhaji Ayinla Folorunsho, the group said the apex court’s judgment had confirmed that the law was no respecter of persons and has no sacred cow.
It added that the ruling provided a good opportunity for Saraki to defend himself before the CCT.
The PDP group said it was earlier shocked by the validation of Saraki’s election by the Kwara State Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.
The group said it would continue to support the Kwara-Central senatorial candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, who had challenged Saraki’s victory at the tribunal.
It urged Abdulrazaq not to be deterred, saying that his attempts to reclaim his mandate were important because it would liberate the people of Kwara State.
The statement read, “The Supreme Court’s judgment, which did not favour Saraki, is good for democracy and the anti-corruption crusade.”
“Abdulrazaq had laid a very solid foundation for his defence by providing evidence which proved that electoral fraud was committed, contrary to the provisions of the Electoral Act (2010). The tribunal ruled against us, based on technicalities.”
