Offa poly holds insurance workshop for teachers
The Rector, Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State, Dr. Mufutau Olatinwo, has said the institution will drive the introduction of insurance as a subject for secondary school pupils. Olatinwo said this at an insurance workshop for some secondary schools in Offa Local Government.
Olatinwo, represented by the Deputy Rector, Administration, Dr. Ayodele Olaosebikan, commended the initiative by the Head of the Insurance Department, Dr. Sarafadeen Raji, saying that it was in line with the polytechnic's mandate.
Raji also acknowledged the role of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria on its efforts to convince the Federal Government to ensure the teaching of insurance in schools.
He added that some of the objectives of the workshop were to develop a blend of technical and theoretical concepts that underpin the teaching of insurance in secondary "distinctive schools and to ensure the widespread of the subject."
The department also donated copies of insurance textbooks published by the CIIN to participants.
Meanwhile, Olatinwo has enjoined members of staff of the institution to make their health and wellbeing a priority.
Olatinwo, who spoke through his Deputy on Administrations, Dr. Ayodele Olaosebikan, at a health talk organised by the polytechnic's medical centre, said that, "being alive and healthy is first choice we have to make among the many choices of life."
The Director of the centre, Dr. Wahab Ajetunmobi, said that the programme became imperative due to recent demise of some members of staff of the school. He further urged participants to make use of the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Speaking on the topic, "You and Your Health," the guest lecturer, Dr. J. Ogunmodede, said the human body was like a car engine designed to use a certain type of engine oil for optimum performance.
Ogunmodede, who is a Consultant Cardiologist with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, said the human body must be nurtured with the right type of nutrients for proper growth.
"When we deprive our body of its required services, it will lead to its malfunctioning and sudden breakdown just the same way a car will breakdown without proper and frequent servicing. Unfortunately, the soul of a man cannot be replaced like an engine of a car so, members of staff are advised to live right always," he said.
