Colleges of Education Crises: Kwara Speaker to Intervene

Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Dr Ali Ahmad has pledged to intervene in the on-going crisis at the State Colleges of Education which has led to lecturers of the affected institutions embarking on an industrial strike about a month ago.

He however appealed to the affected students to maintain calm while the House takes necessary steps on the issue with a view to resolve the matter amicably.

The students in their requests had sought for reduction of their school fees, improvement of their schools infrastructure, payment of bursary and prompt payment of their lecturers salaries.

Addressing the students who had protested to the House of Assembly complex on Tuesday, the Speaker ?stated the House commitment towards ensuring qualitative education in the state.

Appreciating the students and their leaders for their peaceful demonstration, Ahmad noted that they are in the right place and that their agitations would be taken care of.

Assuring the students that he would meet with the authority to ensure that the issues raised are tabled and attended to on time, the Speaker promised to give them positive results.

Ahmad who sympathised with the students said as lawmakers they are saddened with the situation in their respective campuses which had thwart and greatly affected their academics.

According to him, am here as the Speaker because I have education, if I give you a million naira you will spend it at no time. Therefore, the only thing we can bequeath on you is proper education which is everlasting.

It ?would be recalled that the lecturers of the state Colleges of Education under the auspices of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has recently embarked on industrial action to press home their demands from the state government.
