Poll: Low Turn Out, Peaceful Conduct In Kwara

Date: 2015-04-11

There was voters apathy during today's governorship and house of assembly elections in Kwara State.

But the conduct of the exercise was generally peaceful.

Reports reaching us from all the parts of the state indicated that the turn out of voters for yesterday's exercise was not as impressive as that of the March 28 presidential and national assembly elections.

In some polling stations visited in Ilorin, the state capital, the conduct of the exercise was more orderly than the previous one.

While accreditation started as early as 8.00A.M in some polling units, there was little or no complaint about the card reader.

As at the time of filling this report(3.39PM), most voters had voted.

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who spoke with newsmen at different polling units agreed that there was voters apathy.

They are Dr Bukola Saraki, Alh. Abubakar Kawu Baraje and former MInister of Sports, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi.

They however commended the electorate for their peaceful conduct.

They equally praised INEC for conducting a free, fair and credible elections. Saraki who spoke with newsmen at his Ode Opobiyi polling unit praised INEC for making Nigerians proud in the face of the international community.

He expressed the confidence that APC will sweep the poll as it did fortnight ago, even as he attributed the voters apathy to acceptance of defeat by the opposition elements in the state.

In his own remark, Alh. Kawu Baraje described INEC's performance as excellent. He said Prof. Attahiru Jega's INEC has brought credibility to the nation's electoral processes.

Baraje expressed optimism that the APC will not only deliver Kwara, it will also win majority of governorship and houses of assembly seats across the country.

Former minister Bolaji Abdullahi described the 2015 election has the best of its kind.

Abdullahi made the assertion in his residence at Anifowose area .

" 2015 election is unprecedented. INEC has put in the best performance ever in the conduct of the election exercise in this country," he said.

He lauded the initiative of card reader introduced by INEC, describing it as a step forward in Nigerian history.

Abdullahi commended the peaceful conduct of the electorate and the security personnels, saying "that shows the improvement in our democratic culture".

The Former MInister urged every nigerians to unite and support the newly elected president, General Mohammed Buhari, to lead NIgeria to the promised land.

He said, "Irrespective of our party differences, religious, ethnicity, all we need doing is to preach one nigeria and live an exemplary giant to other African countries."

According to him, 2015 election has taught Nigerians a lesson of confidence in their thumb, saying that would force elected politicians to have their electorate in mind.
