Date: 2014-12-07

Five delegates of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State were, on Saturday, were reportedly assaulted by suspected thugs allegedly sponsored by rival opponents in the National Assembly primary elections of the party.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the wounded members of PDP were elected delegates from Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that they were  rushed to a private hospital after both masked and uniformed security personnel and sponsored thugs were allegedly set on them by a chieftain of the PDP in Kwara State.

“Among others, Hajia Abike Alawusa and Mr Baale Sheriff Olanrewaju were violently assaulted by uniformed men on the instruction of the said chieftain,” a source said.

Meanwhile, a political group in Kwara State, Kwara Think Tank, has called for cancellation of the National Assembly primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state due to alleged irregularities.

According to the spokesperson of the group, Adams Aliyu, in a statement made available to journalists in Ilorin, on Saturday, the exercise was marred with violence.

The statement read, “We are saddened once again to inform you that the rain of violence, which heralded the PDP House of Assembly Primary penultimate week, continued today with the violent attack on several innocent members of the PDP in Kwara State by thugs suspected to have been sponsored by Hajia Muyinah Shagaya.”

“As at the time of the release of this statement, not less than five of the duly elected delegates from Ilorin West Local Government Area for the PDP National Assembly primaries have been rushed to the hospital after both masked and uniformed security personnel and sponsored thugs were set on them by a chieftain of the PDP in Kwara State.

“Among others, Hajia Abike Alawusa and Mr Baale Sheriff Olanrewaju were violently assaulted by uniformed men on the instruction of the said chieftain.

“This seems to be a continuation of the rain of violence visited on lawful citizens by loyalists of Alhaja Muyinah Shagaya as witnessed penultimate weekend when crew members of Channels Television were violently assaulted by thugs widely reported to be sponsored by Shagaya and her henchmen,” it claimed.
