Kwara: Flooding will continue until ...- Commissioner
Perennial flooding in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital will not cease unless the Federal government concludes the channelisation and dredging of the Asa river, which started in 2007, Kwara State Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Mr Usman Abubakar Mora has said.
Owing to the flooding, Mora, who lamented that people are continuously rendered homeless, each time it rains, appealed to the Federal Government to either complete the channelisation project of the Asa river or continue the project, beyond where people have their houses.
He said, "As far as we are concerned, the project awarded during the tenure of Hajiya Halima Tayo Alao as Minister of Environment and Housing is being abandoned. The contract is supposed to be in three phases. They have completed phase one, the next state is phase two, but the Federal government has not awarded phase two and since the project is being done in the rainy season, you must move to the next stage."
While he noted government's relentless efforts by sending letters of appeal to the Federal Government and other relevant agencies to rescue and come to the aid of the people of Kwara State, he lamented that the scope of the project was beyond the state.
