Why Ahmed deserves second term - Saraki

Date: 2014-10-12

Former Governor of Kwara State, Dr Bukola Saraki has explained the rationale behind his endorsement of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for re-election.

Saraki who is the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, had endorsed the governor for second term at an APC stakeholders' meeting on Thursday night.

The endorsement has clarified permutations over the political future of Ahmed who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC with Saraki.

Though, many political associations and groups have been making case for Ahmed's second term, rumours were rife of plan to zone the governorship ticket to Kwara Central.

To compound the issue, the APC issued a statement that there would be no automatic ticket for all members of the party "without exception".

Speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, Saraki said, "My endorsement of Governor Ahmed for a second term was not accidental. He worked for it, he merited it because he has performed creditably well".

Asked whether his endorsement had shut out other aspirants, he said the question could only be answered by the party.

"All I have said is that I, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki has endorsed Governor Ahmed for a second term. And this is because the governor has met our people's expectation in terms of performance", he added.

Ahmed had responded through his twitter handle, @Governor_Ahmed, saying, "I thank @bukolasaraki for this resounding endorsement and APC stakeholders for supporting me for a second term. I remain loyal and committed".

As soon as the endorsement was announced, the hall erupted with jubilation in celebration, with the party stakeholders and Ahmed supporters felicitating with him.
