Kwara APC youths disrupt elders' meeting, 20 hospitalised
NO fewer than 20 elders of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State have been hospitalised following severe injuries sustained during an attack by youths who stormed a popular hotel in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state to disrupt a meeting of elders in Kwara South senatorial district allegedly strategising for the second term ambition of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
An eye witness told Vanguard that the aggrieved youths were said to have gone to Ajase-Ipo from Offa, Share, Oro and other neighbouring towns in chartered vehicles and attacked the elders on Tuesday.
They were said to be armed with charms, broken bottles, knives, cutlasses and clubs.
The elders that attended the meeting comprised 10 each from the six local government councils that make up Kwara South senatorial district.
The youths allegedly abused the elders, claiming they were bribed to support the second term project instead of advising the governor on improving lapses of the present administration ahead of 2015 general elections.
The shocked elders immediately dispersed from the meeting in different directions. Many jumped through the windows, abandoning their vehicles.
Over 20 of the elders, who sustained severe injuries as a result of the incident are currently receiving medical treatment in various private hospitals. However, no life was lost.
One of the victims and former member of House of Representatives, Hon Kola Shittu, confirmed the incident.
According to him, “We thank God that nobody died. It is God that saved us. We left the place in different directions. We do not know why they came to disrupt our meeting. We could see from their action that they are aggrieved, but I am surprised that they took laws into their hands instead of making use of various channels available in the party hierarchy to settle any grievances.
“We are not suspecting anybody and we can’t arrest them because they are members of our party. But I can tell you that they will soon come and apologise for their misdeeds.”
Also, a police source at the Divisional Police station at Ajase-Ipo, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying: “We are yet to make any arrest because we are still investigating the incident.”
