PDP berates Kwara over N23bn bond
The party accused the governor of failure to implement people-oriented programmes.
The PDP said the governor could have done more to eradicate poverty “which has in addition increased the rate of suffering in the state geometrically.”
It added that “there is no doubt that the now ruling All Progressive Congress, APC-led government has failed in its entirety.”
However, reacting, the government described the PDP’s position as ‘mischievous’ by going on a mission to “incite public disaffection through mischief and disinformation.”
The government said: “PDP is either completely out of touch with reality or plainly ignorant of public sector finance. It is obvious to all, but Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has remained high-performing since inception through life-transforming programmes.”
The governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Femi Akorede, who reacted on behalf of his principal, said such programmes “include the employment of 5,000 youths, disbursement of N640m to cooperatives, artisans and transporters, the reduction in (Kwara State University), KWASU fees, abolishing of tuition fees at senior secondary school level, payment of bursaries to students, rehabilitation of five general hospitals and massive overhaul of road, energy, education and water infrastructure, to mention a few.”
The PDP, however, insisted that “this condemnation is the true reflection of the minds of the entire people of the state whose mandate the Kwara APC has mortgaged by embarking on endless bond sourcing with no genuine reasons, all with the motive of impoverishing and liquidating the financial base of the state”
The party’s interim state chairman, Solomon Edoga, made the allegation through a statement, saying, “once again, it is obvious that Kwara State under the leadership of the desperate APC chieftains cannot achieve anything meaningful without approaching either money or capital markets for bonds which will eventually spread on the periods that will even out-live them in government.”
“To be precise, Kwarans in their large numbers said in a very loud ovation that they are tired of governance without probity, adequacy and transparency. The APC government that has earlier applied for the sum N30bn loan as reflected in its 2014 budget proposal, has also sought for additional N 23bn loan after it has succeeded in borrowing the sum of N 150m for Kwara Express through Harmony Holdings Limited, even though it failed to account for the over N540m income of the corporation,” he added.
“We in Kwara PDP have discovered that the APC government in Kwara State is grossly misappropriating tax payers’ funds by pursuing shadow-like policies, it is our decision to pass vote of no confidence on Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed and the entire APC leadership, even as we demand explanations on the debt status of the state.”
