Famers/Herders' Clash: Kwara Approves Grazing Reserve, Stock Route

Date: 2014-04-04

The Kwara State government has approved establishment of grazing reserve and stock route across the state to reduce herders/farmers’ clash.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Prince Tunji Moronfoye, disclosed this yesterday while briefing newsmen after the executive council meeting.

It was gathered that the decision was sequel to last year’s bloody clash between herders and Yoruba inhabitants of Alapa in Asa Local Government Area, where several people were killed.

Following the clash, the government set up a fact-finding committee which submitted its report recently and a white paper was issued.

Moronfoye, who briefed newsmen alongside his counterparts in the Ministries of Health and Works and Transport, Alhaji Abdul Kayode and Dr. Amuda Kannike, said five people has been recognised as “arrowheads” of the mayhem.

He however added that police investigation is still ongoing.

To forestall a recurrence of the clash, the commissioner said: “First of all, we are going to get grazing reserves and there is going to be a stock route which would be followed so that they don’t affect the farms. The stock route where these cows and live stock will go through is going to be clearly defined and the grazing reserve would be established everywhere in Kwara State”.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Abdul Kayode, said government approved the establishment of a Hospital Management Board to manage all the state-owned general hospitals, adding that all the five remodelled hospitals would be commissioned soon.

He further stated that government approved the setting up of a state council of works in line with the recommendations of the national council.
