Kwara police parade suspected armed robbers

IN what looked like a miraculous discovery, men of the Kwara state police command have recovered a stolen Infiniti Sport Utility Vehicle, also arresting two of the six-member armed robbery gang who stole the vehicle.

Crime Reports gathered that the  six-man robbery gang had actually succeeded in stealing the Infiniti Jeep from the owner some time ago but were waiting for the buyer before a twist of fate made them to rob another victim, which eventually led to their arrest.

Speaking with journalists while parading two of the robbery suspects in Ilorin at the weekend, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Agboola Oshodi-Glover, said the arrest of the suspects in connection with a more recent robbery led to the recovery of the Infiniti Jeep.

The police boss, who gave the names of the suspects as Adekunle Ishola, Dele Cletus (27), Simon Ogundeji (32), Dare Suleiman (30), Salisu Balogun (45), Okesola Rufai, Kazeem Yakubu and Fatai Yakubu, added that they were arrested with three sharp cutlasses, one Toyota Corolla with registration number Abuja ABC 76 AP, three motorcycles which were an unregistered Daylong, unregistered Qlink and Bajaj motorcycle with registration number EKY 60 QC, two cut-to-size barrel guns and one gold colour Infiniti Jeep.

"On December 13, 2013, at about 8 a.m., one man, Lawal Adewale Dare, living behind Ministry of Agric, Mubo Phase II estate, Ilorin, reported that a gang of robbers numbering about six, fully armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, invaded his house, where household and personal items, including a Toyota Corolla car, with registration number Lagos FE 464 APP, a Tecno handset, jewellery and other items were stolen", Oshodi-Glover said.

The police commissioner also added that the first suspect, Adekunle Ishola, was identified by the complainant, which led to his arrest,  stating that his confession led to the arrest of second, third, and fourth suspects by a team of anti-robbery men from the State Criminal Investigation Department.

"Their confessions also led to the arrest of one Fatai Yakubu of Saki town in Oyo state, who later led detectives to the recovery of an earlier stolen Infiniti Jeep and arrest of two of his gang members", he said.

He said the first four suspects had been charged to court and were being remanded in prison, adding that the case was still under investigation.

Also paraded was one middle-aged woman, Funke Odelabi, who was accused of kidnapping a month old baby from her mother.

"On February 2, 2014, one Funke Olowookere of Sobi Road, Ilorin, gave her one month old daughter to the suspect, who was her neighbour, to keep for her while she was washing the baby's clothes.

"When she finished washing, she discovered that the suspect had disappeared with her baby. A search party was organised but to no avail. The matter was then reported at the police station. In the course of investigation, suspect was traced to and arrested in Ogbomoso and she confessed that she had no child of her own, hence, she decided to steal the one month old baby", he said.

The police boss said the child had been recovered and reunited with her mother, adding that the suspect would be charged to court.

Also, two suspects were paraded for criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of fire arms.

"On February 3, 2014 at about 1.30 a.m., based on a tip-off on the discovery of criminal hideout of a wanted notorious armed robber, popularly called "Gbajama" at a remote area of Oko-Olowo, Ilorin, a team of anti-robbery men of the state police command, led by Superintendent of Police Alabi Peter, swung into action and carried out a raid of the hideout.

"During the raid, two suspects, namely, Bala Tanko and Taju Ayinde, were arrested in possession of two cut-to-size single barrel guns, two live cartridges and one expended cartridge shell, one dane gun and assorted charms.

"The suspects in the course of interrogation, confessed to so many heinous crimes in Ilorin metropolis and beyond and stated further that their own duty was to provide security for the wanted kingpin and others at large while carrying out their nefarious activities", the police commissioner said.
