FRSC harps on urgent rehabilitation of Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road
Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has called for urgent rehabilitation of Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road to save continuous loss of lives and property on the notorious road usually plied by heavy and long vehicles.
Speaking at the inauguration of 2013 ember month campaign programme, in Jebba, on Tuesday, the FRSC North-East Zonal Commanding Officer, Abayomi Omiyale, said the call was informed by higher rate of auto crash, type of vehicles on the road, especially during the ember months.
The FRSC boss, who said there are 144 bends on both sides of the 134 kilometre road, added that the nature of bends on the road was dangerous, describing it as “engineering design failure.”
He also appealed to conscience of road users on the ever busy road, saying there was need for drivers to have change of attitude by obeying traffic rules and regulations to reduce road traffic crashes.
He said motorists should shun over-speeding, overloading, over confidence, overtaking dangerously, and obstruction on the road, adding that, “the faster you go, the harder the impact of auto crash.”
The FRSC boss, who said enforcement of rules and regulations by officers and men of the corps was meant to save lives and property, added that motorists should be cautious while plying the road due to its nature and be conscious of protecting lives of other road users.
Also speaking, state chairman of NURTW, Alhaji Aliyu Ore, commended efforts of the commission aimed at reducing road carnage through its various enlightenment campaigns, adding that many lives had been saved.
He also appealed to government to rehabilitate most of the roads, saying that the bad roads had caused loss of lives and property and lots of damage to vehicles.
The occasion witnessed eye and blood pressure tests among members of NURTW in the area and dignitaries present.
