Senate committed to tackling erosion - Saraki

Date: 2012-04-24

The Senate has reiterated its commitment to tackling perennial flooding across the country. Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology, Sen. Bukola Saraki, gave this assurance, at the weekend, while inspecting an erosion site at Tanke area of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

Saraki said the National Assembly planned to collaborate with relevant agencies to address imminent danger posed by erosion to various communities in the country.

"The Federal Government is aware of the danger posed by erosion to human and capital development and would do everything to address the menace," Saraki stated.

The lawmaker, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, said the cost of finding remedial and lasting solutions to erosion challenges in the country had been factored into the 2012 budget.

He assured residents of the affected areas that the federal, state and local governments would work together to address the issue before the end of the year.

He also promised that all erosion-prone areas in Kwara State would be given utmost attention, in order to prevent any form of disaster.
