Fuel Subsidy: Group Warns Against Victimisation of Senator Saraki

Date: 2012-04-23

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for Transparency in Governance ((CSOTG)) has warned that it will lead Nigerians to resist attempts to punish the wrong people for the fraud in the management of fuel subsidy while allowing those genuinely indicted to walk free.

Reacting to the invitation of Senator Bukola Saraki by the Special Fraud Unit of the police in connection with an alleged bank loan, the group said the Senator should not be singled out for punishment because he dared to raise a motion that exposed corruption. "We expect that in developed climes the zealousness and unquenchable desire by men like Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki are celebrated with medals and we know Nigerians will tow the path of honour to book his name in history. President of the coalition, Comrade Ibrahim Alih told newsmen in Abuja.

He said the only way government can convince Nigerians that it is still interested in implementing the Senate and House of Representatives reports on fuel subsidy probe is to bring the perpetrators of the fraud in the sector to book.

Alih said government and its agencies "should not use guerrilla tactics to rubbish patriots who have staked their lives for government policies on anti-corruption to survive. We shall resist every unlawful means to punish people for other people's sins." He said.

The CSOTG President said "The Nigerian people are greatly alarmed by recent stories reaching us that the Nigerian Police Force has invited Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki to appear before it. This very quick invitation of the Police Special Fraud Unit at a time that government should be battling with the implementation of the House Of Representatives Committee reports leaves the people with more questions than answers."

He condemned what he described as the politicization of the fuel subsidy probe and the victimization of those who have shown the will and commitment in fighting corruption.

"This signal being sent by the Federal Government and its agencies is a clear demonstration that the war against corruption is going nowhere. It is high time we pursue interest for our collective good instead of political vendetta which has completely robbed the nation of true statesmanship like the frank posture of Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki and his fearless colleagues in both chambers of the National Assembly.

"We call on the Federal Government and its agencies in the anti-corruption crusade to concentrate their energies and attention on how best to fight corruption which is a canker worm that has eaten deeply into the fabrics of our socio-economic and political development as a nation to demonstrate the seriousness of government to the poor masses rather than politicizing every attempt or contribution by stakeholders to move the nation forward. History has it that it is only when evil men are exposed and punished that a society assumes its pride in history and not when wrongs are swept under the carpet because perpetrators are connected to the powers that be in the society." Alih said.
