Kwara ACN chief seeks autonomy for LGs

Date: 2012-04-02

Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Kwara State, Prince Saheed Popoola has called for autonomy for local governments, saying such would enable them to have direct access to monthly allocations from the federation account.

Popoola, who is also the chairman of Offa Local Government Area, said such will also hasten the much expected development at the grass roots.

The chairman also charged his colleagues to look inwards for creative ideas that could lead to the generation of more funds for local governments.

Popoola, who spoke at an award ceremony for, "The best local government chairman in good governance in Nigeria" by the Centre for Democratic Governance in Africa, lamented that funds allotted to the local government councils never get to them.

Earlier, the Director General of the centre,  Dr.  Dafe Akpocha said this is the first time the centre is giving the award.

Akpocha added that the award is to identify with good governance, and to encourage the local government chairman to do more.
