Lions Club organises free eye treatment in Ilorin
Lions Club International, District 404B, Nigeria, has committed over N3 million to the restoration of eye sight to Nigerians this year.
Speaking with the Community News at Ayo Bello Memorial Hospital, Ilorin, the club's District Governor, 404B, Nigeria, Professor Abdulfatah Ayoade Adesokan, who spoke through his Chief of Staff, Prince Adepegba Falola, said the core project for the governor's lionistic year was the restoration of sight to the people with one of the commonest eye problems called cataract.
The club's district governor said the free eye care project catered for the cataract surgery operation of the beneficiaries, medication and distribution of glasses.
"During the beginning of this lionistic year, we made publications in form of flyers to all Lions all over Nigeria. Anywhere we go, we distributed flyers, telling them about the core project. All the clubs in Nigeria had done screening where they got the patients for the free cataract surgical operation," he said.
He also said that a lot of peope came from Lagos, Osun, Oyo, including Kwara State, where they had earlier been screened for the operation.
It will be recalled that the Lions Clubs International, District 404B, Nigeria, commenced final cataract surgery for 250 recipients in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, between March 26 and March 30, 2012.
Professor Adesokan, who said the club had successfully carried out eye screening and distribution of thousands of eye glasses in Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, and Kwara states, added that Lion's Club had sponsored many cataract surgeries in partnership with Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, South-West zone.
Lion Ayoade, who said the final cataract surgery for 250 recipients was in partnership with the Sightsavers International and Kwara Eye Care programme on one hand, and Ayo-Bello Memorial Eye Foundation on the other hand, added that the exercise went on smoothly.
