APC, PDP trade words over rising wave of violence in Kwara

Date: 2015-02-09

Ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kwara State and the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party ,are at logger heads over the increasing wave of political violence in the state, which led to the alleged killing of one person.

Aside from the PDP supporter who was killed in the process, the violence also resulted in the destruction of branded APC vehicles at Share, home town of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed yesterday.

Minister of National Planning and Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission, NPC, Dr Suleiman Abubakar, a chieftain of PDP in the state in a statement issued  by his Special Assistant on Media , Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrauf, yesterday, alleged that one Alfa Saadu deen of Kuntu area, believed to be a PDP supporter in Ilorin West local government area of the state, was killed last Friday.

In a sharp reaction, the All Progressives Congress in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, denied the party’s involvement in the killing and reiterated its call on security agencies to investigate the series of attacks on the party, including the shooting of two of its members last Wednesday as well as the attack of its branded vehicles at Share, Governor Ahmed’s hometown yesterday.

Describing the killing as strange and alien to Ilorin culture, the minister urged the security agencies to probe  the killing, with a view to bringing the perpetrators of the act to book.

He said: “While we sympathize with the family of the deceased, we want to reiterate that politics is not a do-or-die and that God gives power to whom He so pleases.”

“Some people can’t afford to take laws into their hands. The security agencies must not fold their arms in the face of this growing intimidation and attack on our supporters”.

But, APC in a statement issued in Ilorin yesterday and signed by the state Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, denied his members’ involvement in the killing, and condemned what he described as increasing spate of violent attacks against members of the party by people he claimed were working for the Peoples Democratic Part, PDP.

Buhari recalled that the official convoy of Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed was attacked last Wednesday at Isapa in Ekiti local government area where two members of the party were shot, while another sustained serious injuries.

He also claimed that five members of the party were attacked in Oyun,   local government area of the state last Thursday during campaigns of the party in the area.

He alleged that some people working for the PDP were destroying campaign billboards of the APC in the state.

He, however, appealed to the police to fish out those allegedly behind the mass attacks of APC members and the destruction of billboards of the party in Ilorin, the state capital.

Buhari expressed great concern over the recent waves of violence being unleashed by suspected political thugs on innocent people of the state, particularly that of Share, the home town of the incumbent governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed.

‘’On Sunday, on their way back from a campaign tour in parts of Kwara North through Share, some PDP thugs again attacked innocent citizens and destroyed about 20 cars parked by the road side.”

We view this unprovoked action of the brigands too unhealthy for a fragile economy like ours. Besides, we are gradually losing the toga of harmonious living placed on our dear state due to the activities of those seeking power by any visible means both legal and illegal,” he stressed.
