Saraki slams NFF, NPL

Date: 2012-03-27

Speaking to newsmen on Sunday during the final of this year's NNPC/Shell Cup between Kwara Football Academy, KFA, Secondary School, Ilorin and National Foundation College, Ughelli at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, Saraki said both boards needed total cleansing.

"We need to clean up Nigerian football because it stinks as a result of corruption. And because of this I am going to make a presentation at the ongoing Senate Committee Public Hearing on Sports where all my views in this regard will be made public," he said.

The ex-governor added, "As you can see, we must make efforts to move sports forward in the country such that the private sector is encouraged to become club owners instead of government owning virtually all the clubs in our premier league. I am seriously looking forward to a day when we would have 95% of football clubs in Nigeria being owned by individuals or the private sector, and the remaining 5% owned by government."

He expressed displeasure about the present state of the KFA which his administration founded.

"I'm not glad with what the KFA has turned out to be because we had a great vision for the soccer academy when I was the Governor of Kwara State."

Our correspondent reports that KFA defeated National Foundation College, Ughelli 4-1 on penalties after a pulsating 2-2 draw in the final of this year's NNPC/Shell Cup.
