'No need for Nigerians to travel abroad for medical treatment'
The Chief Medical rector (CMD) of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin, Professor Abdulwaheed Olatinwo, has said that there is no need for Nigerians to travel abroad for medical services, saying Nigerian hospitals have all it takes.
Speaking at a media chat at the UITH, Ilorin on Tuesday, Professor Olatinwo said, though patients had the right to seek medical attention anywhere they liked, the Federal Government had tried to put all necessary infrastructure in place to encourage quality health care in the nation’s health institutions.
The CMD, who said the major challenge confronting the teaching hospital was revenue generation to meet nagging responsibilities, adding that the management was ready to partner with individuals or groups wishing to endow projects, or do joint partnership on medical equipment or projects on build-operate-transfer arrangement.
He said the hospital had over 120 consultants in all fields of medicine, apart from its other available specialities, calling on governments and individuals to partner with the health institution to elevate it to the height of excellence attainable.
Professor Olatinwo, who said the hospital spent a sum of N16 million on purchase of diesel for power generators every month and additional N2 million on PHCN bill monthly, added that it also invested heavily on power generation with procurement of transformers and generators.
He, however, said that the efforts had improved the power supply from 20 per cent to 85 per cent of the power need in the hospital.
The CMD also said that the health institution would commence its renal care and kidney transplant unit, in collaboration with the International Society of Nephrology and Shellfield University, UK before the end of the year, adding that training of personnel and investigations on the unit were being concluded.
