Saraki Shuns EFCC's Invitation
Former Kwara State Governor, Senator Bukola Saraki, has reportedly shunned an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to appear before it over alleged financial indiscretion when he was the governor of the state between 2003 and 2011 and when he was the executive director of Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria (SGBN).
LEADERSHIP had exclusively reported on Monday that the EFCC had invited Saraki to appear before itsinvestigation team over his alleged involvement in fraud-related matters.
A dependable source had confided in LEADERSHIP that the ex-governor was invited to Idiagbon House, the base of the operations arm of the EFCC in Abuja.
The source also added that the EFCC had compiled a dossier on the ex-governor that contains several allegations of fraud that bordered on abuse of office and money laundering which the anti-graft agency claimed to have covertly investigated over the past few years.
LEADERSHIP correspondent was at the commission's headquarters at about 7pm yesterday to witness Saraki's arrival but the ex-governor did not show up for the scheduled interrogation.
When asked about the next step to be taken by the commission, the EFCC source said, "I can assure you that we will not allow the culture of impunity to take precedence in this matter. The ex-governor was invited and since he has refused to honour the invitation, we will take appropriate action in due course."
