Why we increased nomination fees for LG polls-KWASIEC

Date: 2013-07-23

Chairman of Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC), Dr. Uthman Abdulrahman Ajidagba has explained that the N250, 000 approved as nomination fee for chairmanship candidates in the forthcoming local government elections in the state was informed by inflationary trends.

Chairmanship candidates paid N100,000 as nomination fees during the last LG poll  in 2010 while councillorship candidates paid N50, 000 for same.

The increase however affected only chairmanship candidates as nomination fees for councillorship candidates was retained. Many have called for reduction in the nomination fees.

But the Chairman in an interview with newsmen at the weekend said the things have changed since the last election and the commission cannot be expected to apply the same measures used in 2010.

He warned voters in the state to be peaceful and shun violence during the election, reminding them that in the history of election violence, voters have always been the victims and charged the electorate to conduct themselves peacefully during and after the election.

The chairman who expressed the commission's preparedness for the election promised a level playing ground for all political parties, stressing that as far as the commission is concerned, "There are political parties; opposition or no opposition belong to the political class".
