Corruption a cankerworm militating against effective governance

Date: 2009-08-13

Corruption has been described as the cankerworm militating against effective governance in Nigeria. A Civil Engineering Lecturer at the University of Ilorin, Dr.Yahaya Abdulkareem said this, while featuring on a Radio Kwara interactive programme "The Platform". Dr. Y.A. Abdulkareem who was reacting to the Secretary of State to the United States Government, Hillary Clinton's claim that lack of transparency has eroded the credibility of the Nigerian government called for concerted efforts to check corruption in the country.

He urged politicians and every Nigerian to examine themselves and find something good to do for the Nation. Commenting on the seventy-thirty percent ratio of admission policy favouring science subjects in polytechnics, Doctor Abdulkareem noted that poor foundation and won availability of science materials were responsible for student's attitudes to science subjects.

Dr. Y.A. Abdulkareem who was a former Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin urged the government to introduce serious science subjects in addition to providing equipped laboratories. The Civil Engineer commended the Federal Government on the impending overhauling of the Railway system.

The University Don urged Nigerians to look forward to a very bright future for the country, saying that it has enough resources and the capacity to make it happen. Callers on the programme charged the Federal Government to provide infrastructure for the improvement of science subjects in Schools.
