'Physically Challenged Persons Prefer Begging to Govt Jobs'

Date: 2013-05-21

The Kwara State government has accused some physically challenged persons in the state of rejecting job offers by government and preferring street begging.

The state government recently launched a campaign to rid Ilorin streets of beggars by arresting those who wander Ilorin metropolis and prosecuting them. Following this, some physically challenged persons under the aegis of Concerned Persons With Disability took to the street to protest their colleagues' imprisonment just as they called for appointment of a physically challenged as Special Assistant in charge of their affairs.

But the State Commissioner for Social Welfare, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Samuel Bamisaye said that the recent protest by the physically challenged persons was politically motivated as the law banning street begging had been in existence since 2006.

"There are some people that have been offered jobs but because they believe begging is more profitable they refused to work", he said.
