Reps appropriate over N9bn for FG institutions in Kwara
Federal Government institutions in Kwara State are to enjoy boost in their funds as the National Assembly has appropriated budget to the effect.
The House of Representatives Committee on Education disclosed this in Ilorin while on a visit to the state deputy governor, Elder Peter Kisira.
Leader of the delegation, Hon. Shehu Garba, told the deputy governor that the committee was in Kwara to visit Federal Government institutions situated in the state with a view to ascertaining the accessibility of funds that are meant to effectively run their programmes.
Garba said: "The National Assembly through the budget process has appropriated over N9 billion in the 2012 appropriation to the Federal Government owned institutions in Kwara State. Similar amount was equally budgeted in 2013.
"However, it is not the same amount budgeted that was released and this is part of reasons we are here to actually ascertain how much of the amount appropriated was actually accessed by the schools.
"Part of our oversight functions is to enable us to establish how much was actually accessed by these institutions to be able to determine what informed their shortfall."
The lawmaker said that the committee would also visit all states in the North- Central.
In his remarks, the deputy governor commended the National Assembly for taking such step to ensure that children have access to quality education.
He identified poor infrastructure, dearth of good teachers, essential research and teaching materials as well as mismanagement as some of the majors problems confronting education sector in the country.
The deputy governor, however, called on the Federal Government to vote adequate fund to primary and secondary levels, describing both levels as the foundation of the tertiary institution.
He said: "The committee must send messages through appropriation to tiers of governments concerned so that adequate fund can be provided at the lower level of our education sector."
