Demolition in Kwara: Residents Blame Town Planning on Injustice
Following the demolition of illegal extension of over about 500 shops and houses in Tanke area of in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital for road encroachment, Kwara residents today blamed town planning for partial treatment for some house owners.
Some Kwara residents, who spoke with Royal Times correspondent called on the state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed to verify the conduct of the State Town Planning authority over the demolition of houses and shops along Tanke, which has generated serious comments and criticisms from the general public.
One of the victims of shop demolition, Mr Kabri Ismail alleged that some houses and shops built closed to the point of road, but belonged to influential people were speared of the demolition.
He said some houses and shops were set aside by the state town planning authority during the exercise, in which he said the reason for such action could not be ascertained.
Some residents however alleged that bribery of the authority officials was responsible for it, stressing that they did not criticize the demolition exercise since it was contained in the town planning law, but frowned at partiality of the officials of the authority.
Royal Times reports that a building not too far from Tanke secondary school and a group of shopping complex at Tanke Junction were left behind during the exercise.
Meanwhile, all efforts made by Royal Times correspondent to speak with the Executive Secretary of Town Planning and Development Authority, Mr. Raimi Adeoti, proved futile as he declined comment on the issue.
