Three Suspects Remanded Over Severe Assault of 12-Year-Old Girl in Ilorin
A case of child abuse has emerged in the Idigba, Adewole area of Ilorin after a 12-year-old girl, Misturah Babatunde, was subjected to severe physical torture by her biological father, stepmother and a neighbour over a misplaced N100 note.
The suspects, identified as Babatunde Mustapha (the victim's biological father), Abdulrahman Aisat (her stepmother) and Bashirat Abdulfatai (a neighbour), have been arraigned in court and remanded at the Oke-Kura Correctional Facility in Ilorin.
The ordeal came to light on the night of September 30, 2026, at approximately 9:26 pm, when a resident spotted young Misturah purchasing Gentian Violet (GV) solution from a local chemist shop.
Sensing something was wrong given the late hour, the vigilant neighbour stopped to question the young girl. That brief conversation uncovered the domestic violence: Misturah revealed she was seeking medical treatment for brutal injuries inflicted on her earlier that day.
According to preliminary police reports, the minor was assaulted after coming up short by N100 while hawking fried soya beans (beske) for her stepmother.
As punishment for the missing money, she was severely beaten with an electrical wire and her buttocks were scorched with a live hot coal-pot.
Following a formal report lodged by concerned citizens, the case was officially transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on October 9, 2026, and handed over to the Anti-Human Trafficking, Women and Children Protection Unit for thorough investigation.
Police operatives recovered key exhibits used in the assault, including the electrical wire and the hot coal-pot.
Having concluded initial investigations into charges of criminal conspiracy, cruelty to a child and causing bodily hurt, the Kwara State Police Command arraigned all three suspects in court, where a magistrate ordered their remand at the Oke-Kura Correctional Centre pending further legal proceedings.
