Kwara Assembly Passes 2013 Budget
The Kwara House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the 2013 Appropriation Bill of N96.4 billion into law.
The house increased the budget of N94.4 billion presented by Gov. AbdulFatah Ahmed, in December 2012 by N2 billion.
The motion for the third reading and passage of the bill was moved by the member representing IIesha-Gwanara Constituency, Mr Suleiman Idris.
The Speaker of the house, Mr Razaq Atunwa, said that the capital expenditure was increased to N43.3 billion from the N42.6 billion, while the recurrent expenditure, remained at N53 billion.
Atunwa directed the Clerk to produce a clean copy of the bill for the governor's assent.
The speaker later told newsmen after the passage of the budget that the N2 billion was added to enable the governor fulfil his electoral promises to the people of the state.
He pledged that the house would ensure proper monitoring of the fiscal policy and its implementation.
"We shall ensure that we closely monitor the release of funds allocated to all ministries and parastatals agencies to ascertain if the money are used for the purpose intended," he said.
The house had earlier observed a minute silence in honour of the late Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Chinwike Asadu, who was assassinated in Enugu on March 2.
Atunwa described the demise of the commissioner as a loss not only to Kwara, but the Nigeria Police Force and the country at large.
While describing Asadu as a complete gentleman, dedicated, peace loving and hard working officer, the speaker prayed God to grant the deceased eternal rest and his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
