Disruption Mars Empowerment Programme in Oke-Onigbin
An empowerment programme organised by philanthropist Chief Adejoke Mistura Adeyemi was disrupted on Saturday in Oke-Onigbin, Kwara State, within the Kwara South Senatorial District.
The event, held for selected beneficiaries from Isin, Oke-Ero, Ekiti and Irepodun local government areas, featured the distribution of various empowerment items.
Items shared at the programme included 10 cars, one Bajaj motorcycle, 10 chest freezers, 20 grinding machines, 10 hairstyling dryers, four makeup kits, 10 generator sets and 30 sewing machines.
Although the major items were successfully distributed to beneficiaries, confusion reportedly erupted midway into the event when some unidentified youths and women allegedly invaded the venue and carted away several 5-kilogram bags of rice meant for other beneficiaries.
Security sources said the group overpowered personnel stationed at the venue, including soldiers, police officers, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps officials and local hunters.
Among dignitaries present at the event were Hon. Jolayemi Benjamen, Hon. Rasaki Omotosho and Segun Adebayo.
Traditional rulers in attendance included the Oba Olomu of Omu Aran, Oba Kalmadeen Salawudeen Onigbin of Oke-Onigbin, Oba Omotayo, the Onigbesi of Igbesi, the Oniwo of Oke Aba and other prominent personalities.
Security sources confirmed that no casualties were recorded during the incident.
