Fagbemi Announces Dates for Kwara APC Congresses, Urges Unity as Executives Tenure Ends
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, has called for transparent and all-inclusive congresses, insisting that every party member interested in contesting must be allowed to do so without hindrance.
Fagbemi made the call on Friday during a meeting of the state executive committee, alongside party chairmen and secretaries from the 16 local government areas of the state, convened to review the tenure of the outgoing executives and prepare for the forthcoming ward, local government, and state congresses.
Addressing the meeting, the APC chairman commended party leaders at all levels for what he described as a strong working relationship anchored on unity and progress despite occasional disagreements.
"Politics is about interests, and it is normal to have varied interests," Fagbemi said, stressing that differences of opinion should not be allowed to undermine party cohesion.
With the tenure of the current executives nearing its end, he expressed gratitude to party members for their cooperation and the achievements recorded, particularly the party's success in winning recent elections in the state.
"Some of us might never have met without this executive bond. I appreciate everyone and apologise on behalf of all where we might have wronged each other. I seek forgiveness," he said.
"Some of us might not return after the congresses, but we must part on good terms."
Fagbemi described the forthcoming congresses as a test of character, integrity, and adherence to the party's constitution, adding that the leadership had consistently operated within the provisions of the party's rules.
Reaffirming the congress timetable, he disclosed that the ward congresses would hold on February 18, local government congresses on February 21, while the state congress is scheduled for March 4, ahead of the party's national convention.
He maintained the need for fairness and openness in the process.
"Everyone who desires to contest should be allowed to do so," he said, insisting that all relevant information must be made available to interested members without the formation of caucuses or exclusion of stakeholders.
The APC chairman further urged party leaders to ensure that all stakeholders are carried along, describing inclusiveness as key to sustaining unity within the party.
While congratulating party executives at all levels, Fagbemi paid special tribute to local government executives, whom he described as the backbone of the party because of their closeness to the grassroots, despite what he termed "unwarranted criticisms."
He also urged party leaders to intensify mobilisation efforts across the state, noting that the party's membership e-registration exercise would soon come to an end.
