How democracy Can be meaningful - Atunwa

Date: 2013-02-14

The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr. Razak Atunwa, has said democracy can only be meaningful when its dividends reach the people.

He spoke at Afon, headquarters of Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, according to a statement on Wednesday by  the Special Assistant, Media, KWHA, Abdul-Rahman Sanni.

Atunwa added that democracy would be more impactful, when the people enjoy the basic necessities of life.

He called on political office holders in the country to be more committed to the  improvement of the wellbeing of the people.

He claimed that the Peoples Democratic Party-led government in the area had been responsive to the yearnings of the people.

Atunwa urged PDP members to put party's interest above personal considerations.

Earlier, the Chairman of Asa LGA, Dr. Maftau Yahaya, had said award of contracts for the renovation of 200 classrooms, nine new boreholes; health centres and grading of rural roads had reached advanced stages.

He also claimed that about 100 teachers were absorbed into the Asan Local Government Education Authority to reduce  unemployment among the youth in the area.

The state Chairman of the scholarship board, Alhaji Isiaka Mogaji, said the government had provided scholarships for many indigenes of the state in tertiary institutions.

He urged parents to be more interested in the education of their children and wards.
