Kwara Residents Cautioned to Stay Safe Amid Predicted Thunderstorms and Lightning
The Kwara State Government has warned residents, particularly farmers, to avoid open fields during thunderstorms and lightning following weather predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The advisory, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, follows NiMet's forecast of frequent thunderstorms across the state from Tuesday to Thursday, especially during afternoon and evening hours.
The ministry further advised residents to disconnect electrical appliances when not in use during storm periods. The statement was signed by its Press Secretary, Ashaolu Omotola.
"Farmers are advised to take necessary precautions, as strong winds may precede the rains. Activities in open fields should be limited during periods of lightning, and electrical appliances should be disconnected when not in use. Caution is also advised around trees and unstable structures during heavy downpours," it said.
The ministry also reminded farmers that, "according to NiMet's earlier seasonal climate prediction, Kwara is now entering its official planting season, which typically begins in the first or second week of May. With current rainfall patterns aligning with these projections, this is a favourable window for the commencement of planting activities.
"To ensure a productive season, farmers are encouraged to adopt climate-smart practices such as timely land preparation, use of improved seed varieties, appropriate spacing, and efficient water management. These steps will help reduce risks associated with unpredictable weather and improve yields.
"The Ministry remains committed to supporting farmers with timely advisories and on-field extension services."
