Taekwondo Coach Killed as Badminton Court Collapses During Rainstorm in Ilorin
A tragic incident occurred in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, following a 30-minute rainstorm that struck the Lower Niger River Basin Authority on Monday evening.
Musa Ismail, an Ilorin-born Taekwondo coach and champion, was killed when a section of the newly renovated Badminton court at the facility collapsed during the storm, which occurred between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Eyewitnesses reported that the deceased was crushed by the collapsing structure while at the court, which he regularly used for training.
Musa is said to have been crowned as the 2025 MKA Taekwondo Championship held in Ede, Osun state.
His fellow trainees also described him as an amiable badminton coach.
Findings at Lower Niger River Basin Authority in Ilorin on Tuesday showed that the Badminton court has been sealed with the collapsed section visible from outside the structure.
The staff of the agency declined to comment when approached.
Efforts to reach the Public Relations Officer and the Managing Director of the authority on the incident proved abortive at press time.
PUNCH Metro also observed that the facility has been closed to members of the public following the tragedy.
Members of staff met at the office and declined to speak.
A member of staff who spoke with our correspondent said the victim was not a staff of the Authority but usually came to play in the facility.
The staff who said that only the Managing Director of the Authority could speak on the issue told our correspondent to come to the office on Wednesday to see him.
"The incident is very tragic. It happened unfortunately during the rain on Monday but no one can speak on it except the Managing Director who is not around now. The MD will be in the office tomorrow. If you come, you will be able to speak with him," he said.
He, however, affirmed that the facility has been closed down.
He was said to have married a year ago and is survived by his wife and child.
