Court Remands 40-Year-Old Man Accused of Impregnating Daughter Amid Public Outcry
A magistrates' court in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, has ordered the remand of a 40-year-old man, Olorunlogbon Murtala, accused of impregnating his own daughter.
The alleged incident occurred at the Alagbede compound in Oke-Ola, Oro, within the Irepodun Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. The victim, whose name has been withheld to protect her identity, reported the case to the Oro police station, after which it was escalated to the Anti-Human Trafficking unit at the police headquarters in Ilorin for further investigation.
The case highlights ongoing efforts to address cases of abuse and safeguard vulnerable individuals within the community.
According to the charge sheet, “On 25/01/2025 while she was sleeping, the accused forcefully had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.”
The accused father also allegedly repeated the act “in the midnight of 27/02/2025 which resulted in pregnancy,” the sheet added.
The police told the court that the suspect confessed to the crime.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Ajanaku Abdulkadir, urged the court to remand the suspect pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
In his ruling, Magistrate H. A. Alege ordered the remand of the suspect in a federal correctional facility and adjourned the case to March 10, 2025.
