KWHA orders on Ilorin metro refuse

Date: 2013-01-18

The Kwara State House of Assembly has ordered the state Ministry of Environment and Forestry to collaborate with relevant agencies to clear the refuse and bushes within Ilorin metropolis within three weeks
It also urged the state government to urgently provide the logistics to ensure the implementation of the recommendation.
The directive was contained in the recommendations of the House Committee on Health and Environment, read by its Chairman, Alhaji Monde Aliyu Umar on the “Filthy surroundings in some areas in GRA and the metropolis”.
A member representing Omupo Constituency, Hon. Mashood Bakare, had at the plenary on November 13 last year raised a matter of general public importance on filthy surroundings in Ilorin metropolis which prompted the House to direct the committee to investigate the matter.
The parliament at its Wednesday plenary which was preside over by the Deputy Speaker, Prof. Muhammed Gana Yisa, urged the state government to conduct a comprehensive review of its policy on waste management and environmental protection as a matter of urgency.
It equally directed its Committee on Health and Environment to monitor compliance and give periodic report to the House.
In another development, the House urged the state government to reconstruct the collapsed culvert on Igbo Ogo-Odo Aran road at Osi through joint project with Ekiti Local Government.
This plea was the only recommendation on the report of the House Committee on Energy, Works and Transport read by its Chairman Hon. Bakare on a petition titled “Save our soul,” written by Osi Welfare Association on the collapsed bridge on Igbo Ogo-Odo Aran road.
The petition said the collapsed bridge was constructed in 1976, attributing its collapsed which it said has adversely been affecting socio-economic activities of the residents to upsurge of size, population and gully erosion.
