Sanitation: Kwara Summons Transporters, Threatens To Shut Motor Parks
The Kwara State Government has warned motor park operators in the state to either obey environmental regulations or close down.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman, gave the warning during the review of the monthly sanitation exercise in the state.
Usman noted that the chairmen of the various transport unions operating in the state had been summoned to a meeting with the state government on ways to ensure that their members adhered to relevant environmental laws.
City & Crime reports that some motor parks were brazenly loading passengers while the environmental exercise was on in the state on Saturday.
Speaking on the development, the commissioner said, “We all saw what happened at the Geri Alimi area, especially at that independent motor park, and what they were saying to us.
“So, we are inviting all these people, and they must comply with environmental laws or we will close all those places that are found wanting.
“In fact, that independent motor park at the Diamond Underpass; we are closing it down by the special grace of God, because we cannot afford people operating under our supervision and not complying with environmental laws.
“Our sanitation is just two hours once a month. So, it is not too much to ask people to observe environmental laws within those two hours. There is no way you can be operating in our state and not obey the relevant laws of the land. We will not allow it.”
The commissioner also hinted that leaders of Okada riders and tricycle operators in the state would also be summoned for a meeting on the need to sensitise their members on the observation of the monthly sanitation exercise.
