2 Herders Charged With Killing Farmer, Injuring Daughter In Kwara

A magistrates' court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, has ordered the remand of two herders, Ali Mohammadu (24) and Sidi Abubakar (12), for killing a farmer and injuring his daughter over grazing rights.

The suspects were arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide contrary to Sections 97 and 221 of the Penal Code.

According to the charge sheet, the victim, Danjuma Maidanji, and his children, were attacked by the suspects on his farm with sticks which resulted in his death, while his daughter, Mariam, sustained an injury on her head.

The charge sheet reads in part: “The suspects were invited by the deceased to graze their cattle on his farm to eat the remnants of his farm produce in the afternoon.

“But they returned to the farm with their cattle in the night the same day and attacked the deceased and his children which eventually led to his death and destruction of his harvested maize.”

The prosecutor, Ayeni Gbenga, urged the court to remand the suspect, a prayer that was objected to by their counsel, Barr Mahmud.

The magistrate, Dasuki, ordered their remand and adjourned to January 17, 2023.
