Rename Airport after Saraki - Kwara Govt ...Names Street after Him

Date: 2012-12-07

Kwara State Government has given its support to the resolution of the Senate, urging the Federal Government to rename the Ilorin International Airport after the late Second Republic Senate Leader, Dr. Olusola Saraki.

Secretary to the state government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, during a post State Executive Council meeting media briefing in Ilorin on Thursday, said the council had approved that Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, write President Goodluck Jonathan in support of the Senate's resolution.

He stated that the government had renamed the Fate Road from Fate Roundabout to Government Secondary School Roundabout as Olusola Saraki Way.

He added that the road, starting from Geri-Alimi Roundabout to Yebumot Hotel, remained Dr. Olusola Saraki Drive.

The measures, he said, were aimed at immortalising Saraki, who was regarded as the 'Strong man of Kwara politics,' and who had dominated the political landscape in the state for over four decades.

Gold also said in view of the recent flood disaster and damage suffered by communities in the state, the government had called on the Federal Government to facilitate the take off of the Hydro Power Producing Area Development Commission before the conclusion of the ongoing unbundling of the electricity sector.

He stated that this was necessary to mitigate the miseries of the affected communities.
