Kwara Poly Students Protest Hike in Transport Fare
Students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin yesterday barricaded the school's gate and other entrances disallowing commercial vehicles from entering the institution, in protest against what they described as arbitrary increment of transport fare.
But the school management, in a statement issued after a joint meeting with the students and the drivers, said an agreement had been reached on a downward review of the fare.
Meanwhile, one of the students' union leaders, who pleaded anonymity, said taxi drivers had increased their fare from N30 to N50, while bus drivers increased theirs from N20 to N40.
He urged the institution's management to come to the aid of the students "by asking for the reversal of the transport fare to the old rate by the transporters.
A bus driver, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the problem was caused by drivers operating from Elekoyangan area to the polytechnic and those operating at the gate of the institution.
