Kwara Assembly renames Saraki varsity to Kwara State varsity

Kwara State House of Assembly has amended the Kwara State University (Amendment) Bill, 2020 which reverted the name of the university from Abubakar Sola Saraki University to Kwara State University.

It is recalled that the immediate past state Assembly had passed a bill renaming the university from Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete to Abubakar Sola Saraki University.

According to a press statement by the media team of the House on Tuesday, the amendment was part of four amendment bills passed "to drive best practices in the education sector and Local Government administration in the state."

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon Yakubu Danladi Salihu, has also directed the Clerk of the House, Hajia Halimah Jummai Kperogi, to send clean copies of the Bills to the state governor for his assent.

The Amendment Bills passed by the assembly are Kwara State Teaching Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2020 which abrogated office of the Permanent Secretary and replaced it with that of Secretary as Head of Administration while the Chairman becomes the Chief Executive and Accounting Officer of the Commission.

The Kwara State University (Amendment) Bill, 2020 which reverted the name of the University from Abubakar Sola Saraki University to Kwara State University.

The Kwara State Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education (Amendment) Bill, 2020 that abrogated the office of the Permanent Secretary and replaced it with the Secretary of the Board as the Administrative Head and make the Chairman the Accounting Officer.

Also passed was the Kwara State Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions)(Amendment) Bill, 2020 which abrogated the office of the Permanent Secretary and replaced it with the Secretary of the Commission as the Administrative Head and make the Chairman the Accounting Officer.

The speaker directed the clerk of the house to send clean copies of the Bills to the State Governor for his assent.

Meanwhile, the House has called on Federal and Kwara State governments to deploy and ensure adequate use of road signage on the Eiyenkorin – Airport – Garin Alimi road to check the spate of accidents on the road.

This was the resolution of the House on a Matter of General Public Importance raised by Hon, Ambali Olatunji Ibrahim, Owode/Onire Constituency on the recent accident on the road which reportedly claimed nine lives.

Hon Ambali explained that there was an urgent need for proactive measures to check the spate of accidents on the road.

Other members who spoke on the motion included the Deputy Speaker, Hon Adetiba Olanrewaju Raphael and member representing Ojomu/Balogun Constituency, Hon Saheed Popoola.

They identified over speeding and impatience as some of the factors responsible for accidents on the road.

The speaker directed the clerk to forward the resolutions of the House to the appropriate quarters for necessary actions.

Earlier, while welcoming the Honourable Members back from recess, Rt Hon Salihu said the 9th Assembly would devote the last lap of its first session to oversight functions.

"As we resume, you should get prepared because the better part of this last lap of this first session will be dedicated to oversight functions as statutorily required of us.

"The exercise cannot be less rigorous as the recently concluded budget consideration and passage because we are going to be as meticulous and thorough as ever," he said.
