Omolewa Ahmed Vows to Tackle Cancer in Kwara

Date: 2012-10-05

The wife of Kwara Governor, Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, on Thursday said she would tackle cancer and other medical challenges facing women and children in the state.

Ahmed, who said this while inaugurating a Women and Child Survival Medical Committee in Ilorin, pledged that the new body would work with her pet project, LEAH Charity Foundation.

The governor's wife said that she was worried by the spate of cancer and other medical challenges confronting women and children in the state.

"As a mother, I am greatly worried about cancer and other medical challenges that women and children are prone to.

"These diseases are preventable if women are enlightened and duly informed about preventive measures and early detection techniques," she said.

Ahmed urged the committee to proffer solutions and probable palliative care for the diseases.

Dr Dupe Demola-Popoola, a consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, commended the governor's wife for her efforts at addressing women and children's health challenges.

Demola-Popoola, who is also the chairperson of the committee, said that the committee would ensure that preventive diseases among women and children were controlled.

She appealed to the state government to make medical checkup mandatory for primary school pupils.
