Ahmed Warns DPMs, Treasurers
Directors of Personnel Management and treasurers of local governments in Kwara State have been warned to guide against financial recklessness in their councils or face the sack.
Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, who sounded the note of warning at a meeting with the officers at the Government House, Ilorin, said information reaching him indicated that some of the officers may have engaged in unwholesome deeds with top officers in the local government, creating a situation that is affecting the councils.
"The government is aware of the financial recklessness in some councils which is due to connivance of DPMs and Treasurers with other top council officials," the governor stressed.
Governor Ahmed observed that some local governments were running budget deficit and directed the councils to immediately prune down their expenditure.
The governor who said the meeting was to appraise their activities and suggest the best ways of meeting their responsibilities to the populace, advised the councils to key into his government's policy thrust and shared prosperity programmes.
He also directed the DPMs and treasurers to ensure the removal of the names of ghost workers from their payrolls, stressing his government's determination to establish the actual wage bill of each local government through another biometric exercise.
He emphasised that investigations would be carried out on those engaging in shady deals in local governments in the state, maintaining that anyone found wanting would face the wrath of government.
Governor Ahmed therefore directed the DPMs to submit their personnel cost documents to the Commissioner for Economic Planning today (Monday) for further verification.
He also urged them to henceforth design their annual budget in consonance with the state government's budget with a view to meeting the yearnings and aspirations of their people.
"Local government budgets are not adequately prepared and this runs counter to your duties and responsibilities to the people", the governor lamented.
"The State budget must be seen to be flowing into the local government budgets, especially in the execution of developmental projects.
"Henceforth, the state government will engage local government areas in proper budget preparation.
"All treasurers and accountants that are involved in budget preparation will be made to see the state Commissioner for Economic Planning on budget formulation and preparation."
