UNILORIN Mass Comm Dept immortalises Mahmud

Date: 2017-07-18

The Head, Department of Mass Communication, University of Ilorin, Dr. Saudat Abdulbaqi, has unfolded plans by the department to establish a printing press that will be named after her predecessor, late Doyin Mahmud, in a bid to further immortalise the maverick journalist, who died eight years ago. Abdulbaqi disclosed this at the annual memorial lecture organised in honour of the late Mahmud.

Before he joined the service of the University of Ilorin as the pioneer Head of Department, the late Mahmud was the former Editor of The Herald Newspaper, Guardian and pioneer Chief Operating Officer and Editor-in-Chief of Daily Independent Newspapers. He died on Sunday September 20, 2009.

Since then, the department had made it mandatory for the final year students to organise a memorial lecture in his honour. Speaking at this year’s lecture, which was the 6th in the series organised by the Association of Mass Communication Students, AMCOS, Abdulbaqi said the late journalism teacher deserved the honour because “he reserved his last for the department.”
