Date: 2012-08-01

Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has advised the Federal Government to adopt a fresh approach to funding the police and other security agencies through the capital and bond markets.

According to the governor, a long term strategic funding regime through funds from the capital or bond market would enable government to adequately equip the police and other agencies to confront the spate of violence in parts of the country.

Speaking to journalists in Ilorin yesterday, Governor Ahmed said to overcome the ever increasing security threats facing the nation, the federal government can raise the necessary fund from the capital market in order to accomplish within a year what would ordinarily take more than five decades.

Governor Ahmed, who raised concern over persistent insecurity in the country, said there was an urgent need to adopt a long term investment approach in strengthening the security sector.
The Governor attributed the slow pace in the performance of men of the Nigeria Police to the lack of modern fighting equipment capable of combating crimes and criminality in the country.

According to the governor "Nigeria is blessed with fordable and dedicated security whose zeal and ability to perform is often hindered by lack of sophisticated equipment and poor remuneration".
The governor further stated that, "Security issue is a lifelong affair and must be given long term investment approach only if our yearnings and aspirations for our dear nation are to be adequately achieved.

He observed that working tools, adequate motivation and conducive working environment of personnel who are charged with the function of ensuring peaceful co-existence in the country must be commensurate with the terms of send lee as embedded in the nation's constitution and the various acts that gave birth to their existence.

Governor Ahmed therefore urged Nigerians to be law abiding as government was doing everything within its reach to ensure the restoration of peace and tranquility into the nation

The governor further state that, "Security issue is a lifelong affair and must be given long term investment approach only if our yearnings and aspirations for our dear nation are to be adequately achieved.

He observed that working tools, adequate motivation and conducive working environment of personnel who are charged with the function of ensuring peaceful co-existence in the country must be commensurate with the terms of service as embedded in the nation's constitution and the various acts that gave birth to their existence.
