How to check homicides in Nigeria, by police commissioner

Date: 2016-08-26

To check homicides, Nigerians should all times make their destinations known to relatives, the Commissioner of Police for Kwara State, Olusola Amore, has advised.

Addressing his maiden press briefing yesterday in Ilorin, he raised the alarm over high incidence of murders by supposed bosom friends, warning that the trend would no longer be tolerated.

Citing a case of two persons, Yahaya Umar and Abubakar Saletu, now in police net, he said the duo allegedly conspired and killed their male friend while walking along a bush path.

According to him: "Umar and Saletu, both of Wobe Fulani Camp via Okuta at Kosubosu Baruten Local Government of Kwara, were found in possession of a bag. On interrogation, the bag was found to contain a human head among other items.

"Interrogation further revealed that the suspects took the head to one Alhaji Kuranga, a male with Muhat Company. A search in the bush led to recovery of a headless body of their friend who had been declared missing and which the suspects confessed to have killed."

Amore, while making reference to such cases nationwide, cautioned: "We need to alert members of the public on the rising cases of deaths by beheading through friends or associates. Therefore, endeavour to tell your people where you are going to even when in company of these so-called friends."

Already, he had confirmed the arrest of an adult male of the Tsaragi ethnic stock allegedly linked with the killing of five people on a portion of land reportedly owned communally.

The police chief stressed that, on inquiry, the suspect showed that he carried out the dastardly act, in connivance with four others now at large, as a reprisal for the death of his brother during December 2015 bloody feud between members of the adjoining communities.
