An Ilorin Area Court on Friday dissolved the six-year-old marriage between one Abibat Lawal and Babatunde Aliyu for lack of care and abandonment on the part of the latter.

Abibat, a resident of No. 7, Ile Olokun, Asunnara, Ilorin, Kwara State had approached the court to seek the dissolution of her marriage, alleging that her husband had abandoned his matrimonial duties, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The plaintiff, a mother of two, claimed lack of care, abandonment and bad attitude toward the matrimonial home as reasons for the divorce suit. Lawal said she no longer loved her husband and that she had lost interest in continuing with the union.

She said, "When I was sick and hospitalised for three days, my husband did not bother to pay me a visit at the hospital.

"This was why I decided to pack out with the children to a new apartment." The plaintiff, however, urged the court to order the defendant to make remittances for the maintenance of the two male children living with her. The defendant, in his response, said he had no objection to the dissolution of the marriage.

"I have agreed to maintain the two children born in our marriage," Aliyu said.

The judge, Mr. Yusuf Abdulkareem, dissolved the marriage and ordered the defendant to pay N3,000 monthly to his wife for upkeep of the children.
