Join government in fighting corruption -IMAN charge religious leaders
The Islamic Missionaries' Association of Nigeria (IMAN) has called on religious leaders in the country to join hands with the government in sensitizing the citizens on the consequences of corrupt practices.
IMAN in a communique issued at the end of its annual Ramadan lecture called on governments at all levels to expose and prosecute corrupt public officials in line with the present administration agenda.
This, according to the communique signed by IMAN Secretary-General, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim and Alhaji Salihu Baba Arowolo on behalf of participants, would check corruption and abuse of office by public officials.
While emphasizing that good leadership was built on accountability and transparency, the communique called on Nigerian leaders provide social amenities for the people and pay workers salaries and other entitlement regularly. It stressed the need for government to intensify efforts to eradicate all social vices by enacting laws that would deal with offenders.
It implored Nigerians to refrain from excessive lust for money and other material wealth but rededicate themselves to Allah instead of material acquisition. IMAN also advised security agents and judiciary to be up and doing in ensuring quick dispensation of justice.
"Judiciary must be proactive by adhering strictly to the Administration of Criminal Justice Act in all criminal cases through the rule of law, equity, justice and fairness". The communique condemned increase wave of child abuse and called on parents and other stakeholders to ensure that inalienable rights of a child contained on the Child Rights Act as well as the Holy Quran and Hadith of Prophet are strictly followed. "Parents/guardians should ensure that their children and wards are taught good moral by instilling discipline in them. In the same vein, schools also need to complement these by emphasizing on religious moral education in the school curriculum".
IMAN identified the crucial role of media in changing the society for better and called on media practitioners to be vibrant in the course of Islamic information dissemination and propagation of Islamic activities. Speaking on diversification of the nation's economy, the it noted that Nigeria was blessed with land where agriculture would thrive.
The communique called on the government to advance policies that would encourage sufficient food production for citizenry, adding that good agricultural practices would provide industrial raw material which would create job opportunity for teeming youths.
"IMAN appeals to well-to-do Muslim philanthropists to come to its aid in completing it projects at Islamic centre in Ilorin so that Muslims could be proud of it as a place to serve Almighty Allah to the fullest.
"Our appeal also goes to the Kwara State Government to compensate IMAN for taking away almost half of its land by Bureau of Lands during the construction of Mandate lll House Estate to enable it complete it project on the site".
