Kwara assures on welfare of education staff
FOLLOWING agitation by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Commitee in Kwara State over non-payment of workers salary, the state government has reiterated its determination to ensure that issue of workers' salary arrears in state-owned institutions is resolved soon.
Speaking while meeting with officials of the NANS in Ilorin, the special adviser on Labour and Students Matters, who represented Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, Prince Bisi Fakayode, said that the state government was working to improve on present situation of educational sector in the state.
The governor's aide, who said the government had approved immediate disbursement of fund for payment of salary of the staff of state College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies, Ilorin, added that salary of staff of other colleges and SUBEB would soon be paid.
He also said that the state government had approved provision of transport scheme for students of Kwara State University, Malete and University of Ilorin, adding that development of infrastructural facilities in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the state would soon be embarked upon.
Also speaking, the president of NANS Joint Campus Committee, Comrade Habeeb Tajudeen, said the group had planned a rally to call attention of the state government to such perceived decadence in education system in the state, adding that the group had no score to settle with government except calling attention to matters on education and welfare.
The students said their agitation was premised on dilapidated infrastructure in schools in the state, as well as general welfare of both staff and students in the state. Comrade Tajudeen, who lamented condition of campuses in state owned institutions, described state of Offa road leading to Federal Polytechnic, Offa as deplorable.
